For many businesses, corporate social responsibility (CSR)—especially charitable activities—often intensifies during crises like natural disasters or the Covid-19 pandemic. But for the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank), CSR is not a seasonal effort. It is a consistent, long-term commitment marked by meaningful initiatives across the country.
Building homes for those in need
In late May, Mr. Mau Chanh, a near-poor resident of Ma O Village, Son Trung Commune, Khanh Son District, Khanh Hoa Province, received the key to his new, sturdy home. The house was built with a grant of VND60 million from VietinBank.
“What once seemed like a distant dream—a permanent home—has come true thanks to the care of local authorities and VietinBank,” Mr. Chanh said, beaming with joy.
He is among many families benefiting from the bank’s housing support. On May 21, 2025, VietinBank and the Khanh Hoa Steering Committee for Eliminating Dilapidated Houses handed over 83 newly built homes to poor and near-poor households in Khanh Son District. The total project value was nearly VND5 billion.
“These houses are built to last at least 20 years and meet basic living standards,” said Ms. Tran Thu Mai, chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Khanh Hoa and vice chair of the Provincial Steering Committee.
Additionally, VietinBank’s Khanh Hoa branch distributed 130 care packages—each worth VND1 million—to families in need.
Since 2010, VietinBank has contributed over VND56 billion to Khanh Hoa Province to build more than 1,180 homes, one school, donate two ambulances, and provide gifts to disadvantaged and policy-beneficiary households.
Just 10 days earlier, on May 12, 2025, VietinBank joined the Ministry of Public Security and provincial authorities to launch a major campaign in Dak Nong Province. Together, they handed over a prototype house in Dak Nia Commune, Gia Nghia City, and committed VND30 billion to build 500 homes for local residents.
In Dak Nong alone, the bank has invested over VND72 billion in social programs, including nearly 850 homes, four schools, one education center, four clinics, two ambulances, medical equipment, and Tet gifts for underprivileged families.
On April 24, 2025, VietinBank pledged to help eliminate dilapidated housing in Lai Chau Province, committing to build 1,100 homes worth a total of VND66 billion. In total, the bank has spent more than VND97 billion on welfare projects in Lai Chau, including 305 homes, five cultural centers, one medical school, one clinic, six ambulances, and various gifts and insurance policies for poor and policy-beneficiary households.
Earlier this year, on February 9, in Chi Linh City (Hai Duong Province), the bank donated VND2.5 billion to support housing for poor and near-poor families. Since 2010, VietinBank has contributed more than VND89 billion to Hai Duong Province, funding schools, ambulances, medical supplies, Covid-19 response efforts, disaster recovery, and over 700 homes.
Most notably, on October 5, 2024, when the Government and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front launched a national housing campaign, VietinBank committed VND100 billion to support efforts in Soc Trang Province.
Expanding social welfare activities
Beyond housing, VietinBank continues to support a wide array of welfare projects. On November 22, 2024, in Xin Man District, Ha Giang Province, the bank helped inaugurate several community projects in Then Phang Commune. These included a concrete road connecting the local school to an irrigation canal, a new community cultural house, and upgrades to Quan Then Primary School, which all cost over VND1.7 billion.
Since 2009, VietinBank has contributed more than VND327 billion to Ha Giang Province, supporting school and hospital construction, housing, roads, and cultural infrastructure.
In August 2024, the bank donated VND200 million worth of teaching equipment to Ha Tien Kindergarten in Thanh Hoa Province.
Following Typhoon Yagi in October 2024, VietinBank contributed nearly VND10.6 billion to help affected families recover. At the donation event held by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, Deputy General Director Nguyen Tran Manh Trung said VietinBank’s staff, union members, and employees had voluntarily donated one day’s salary for storm victims.
Supporting education
VietinBank also places strong emphasis on education. During the 2024–2025 academic year opening at the Banking Academy in Hanoi, the bank awarded VND500 million in scholarships to students.
In September 2024, VietinBank granted VND300 million in scholarships to students at the National Economics University. It also supported the “Studious and Underprivileged Female Students” program by Phu Nu TP.HCM (HCMC Women) newspaper in August, contributing VND200 million. The initiative provided 310 scholarships worth VND716 million to students from disadvantaged backgrounds or orphaned by Covid-19—marking the second consecutive year of VietinBank’s involvement.
